Martin Spaink

Martin took up an interest in Medieval chant and Indian music and has been studying both since 1986. He sang for a while in the Amsterdam Schola Cantorum and followed lessons in Indian classical singing. In 1988 he followed a course with Dominique Vellard which inspired him to pursue his own researches in working with the original medieval music notations. Since then he has followed courses with various musicologists. In 1989 he founded 'ensemble Euphonia' with Rollin Rachele and performed in various music festivals.

As regards Indian music, Martin has studied Dagarvani Dhrupad with Ustad Sayeeduddin Dagar and has accompanied many Indian musicians on tanpura. In 1999 he found an old sarangi and has been learning by himself. Practising both medieval and Indian classical music is in his opinion a very satisfactory combination.
